# Nutrition & Food Database
Self-hosted Open Food Facts server.
## What this is
Open Food Facts is the world's largest open product database (3M+ products) — used by Yuka, Cronometer, MyFitnessPal community, FoodData Central, and thousands of researchers. The upstream service runs at <openfoodfacts.org>. This room app runs the **same server stack** as a personal instance — useful when you want:
- A private API for an app you're building (no rate limits, no public DB calls)
- A regional fork of the OFF data (e.g. country-specific products)
- A research environment with custom enrichment
## What this is NOT
Most end-users want the **public OFF database** — install the Open Food Facts mobile app + use the public API. Running your own OFF server is a deep technical commitment with limited day-to-day end-user value vs the hosted version.
## Packaging
Heavy all-in-one build (Perl + Apache + MongoDB + nginx + multiple workers). **100 GB volume** for products + photos. The full OFF product DB is **~10 GB of MongoDB + 200 GB+ of product photos** — initial sync from the public dump takes hours. Manifest defaults to an empty instance; populate via the OFF data dumps at <https://world.openfoodfacts.org/data>.
## CONFIRM-AT-BUILD
OFF is intentionally rough to deploy — the upstream architecture is decades old and tightly bound to its environment. Pin everything; expect maintenance work.
